Discover Es Castell
Es Castell is a fascinating garrison town situated on the southern shore of Mahon harbour, just three kilometres from the capital city. Originally established during the eighteenth century as a base for British soldiers, the town retains a strong colonial feel with its grand Georgian architecture and the central Placa de S'Esplanada, which formerly served as a military parade ground. The town is famous for being the first place in Spain to see the sunrise and is home to several historical landmarks including the red town hall and a dedicated military museum.
While the town does not have its own beach, it features two picturesque inlets known as Cala Fonts and Cala Corb. These areas are lined with former caves that have been converted into vibrant restaurants and bars, offering a unique atmosphere where traditional fishing boats still dock. Its proximity to Mahon allows for easy exploration of the second deepest natural harbour in the world and the various cultural attractions of the city. Es Castell provides a sophisticated urban experience that combines maritime charm with a rich military history, making it a distinctive destination on the east coast of the island.
